It is quite natural for you to get confused if CBD oil is good for sports injuries or not. Here, we give you a brief overview of the same.

CBD – An overview and its benefits

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the 100 chemical compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant. This is the plant from where the euphoria-causing, psychoactive component of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is also obtained. However, you don’t have to worry at all. CBD is absolutely safe, as it doesn’t contain any euphoria-causing elements. It doesn’t make you feel high and doesn’t alter your motor skills as well. This is why CBD is legal in most countries.

Also, CBD is known to contain many useful cannabinoids that are essential for your overall health. Studies have proved that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can provide you with immense relief in chronic pain in the joints, arthritis-related aches, swelling, pain caused by sports-related injuries, and the like. The painkillers that are available OTC are full of chemicals and side effects that can affect your health in the long run.

This is why today, CBD has become very popular in the field of getting treated for sports injuries. Firstly, it is a compound extracted from a plant; therefore, it doesn’t have any side effects associated with it. Secondly, tests have proved that this compound helps to reduce seizures in patients with epilepsy and control inflammation as well. Is it legal?

Yes, CBD gives you immense relief against injuries, muscle fatigue and wear & tear issues. However, as a professional athlete who takes part in various sporting events, you should be aware of these points:

  • Though the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances in 2018, many sporting events still forbid the use of CBD in any form.
  • In countries where it is legalised, CBD should contain less than 0.3% of THC. However, you may be still be prohibited to take part in certain events if you have even very little THC in your body at the time of the test. The decision of the event organisers is final, and you should remember this at all times.

What to note?

Firstly, you need to talk with your organisers to know if CBD is allowed in that particular event. If yes, you need to talk to your doctor about the dosage you have to consume. Though tests have proved that people react well with even 1500mg CBD per day, you should always start with 5 or 10mg of CBD per day for the initial few weeks. If your body is reacting well, you can slowly increase the dosage to 10mg per week and get good relief from your pain from injuries.

Some common but not serious side effects that you may or may not experience in the initial weeks of consuming CBD are nausea, dryness of mouth, and digestion problems. These will subside automatically if you reduce the dosage of CBD for a few days.
